A season removed from going empty-handed for the first time in the Tim Cone era, Barangay Ginebra returned to a familiar destination where it faces a familiar foe.

Big games from rookie RJ Abarrientos, Scottie Thompson, Maverick Ahanmisi and Japeth Aguilar, plus the usual late buckets from Justin Brownlee, propelled the Gin Kings to a 102-99 win over the San Miguel Beermen that took Ginebra back to the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.

Ahanmisi scored 25 points after going 9-for-15 from the field, providing the support that Brownlee and the usual reliables needed at the clutch.

Ginebra will meet TNT in a rematch of the 2023 edition of the title series, which ended with Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and the Tropang Giga stopping Brownlee and the Kings in six games.

Game 1 is set for Sunday at Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Cone has brought Ginebra back to the PBA’s ultimate stage after a pair of semifinal exits in the 2023-24 campaign. That broke a streak of seven straight seasons under Cone that the Gin Kings won at least one championship.

But an offseason retooling, which saw the arrival of Abarrientos and ex-Terrafirma stars Stephen Holt and the currently injured Isaac Go, plus the return of Brownlee to domestic duties, has immediately paid off for Ginebra.

Not an easy route

It wasn’t easy, however, since the Kings had to go through their old rival the Meralco Bolts, who beat them in Game 7 of last season’s Philippine Cup semis with a three-game sweep of the quarters.

Then it was the Beermen’s turn to fall victim to the Kings, who also avenged their three-game loss to the same team in the previous season’s Commissioner’s Cup semifinals. Ironically, both San Miguel and Meralco went on to complete their respective title runs after going through Ginebra.

The final mission will be TNT, which had the most number of wins in the 10-game group stage with eight to top Group A, and lost just one each against NLEX in the quarters and Rain or Shine in the semis to march into the championship round.

Brownlee and Hollis-Jefferson, perhaps the final two contenders for the Best Import award, will duke it out for the third time for the championship, including last year’s Asian Games when Brownlee and Gilas Pilipinas defeated Hollis-Jefferson and Jordan for the gold in Hangzhou, China. INQ

Trump Fake Worked At A Closed McDonalds

0

[ad_1]

Trump tried to fool Pennsylvania voters by showing up at a closed McDonalds and pretending to work.

Trump staged his humiliating stunt for who knows exactly what reason, probably because he thinks that Kamala Harris didn’t really work at McDonalds and now he can say he did, but he didn’t.

It was all a staged photo-op. The McDonalds was closed:

Here are the cars rehearsing the drive-thru scene before Trump arrived:

The supporters who Trump served were pre-screened by the Secret Service before entering the closed restaurant:

Here is Trump’s staged scene at the drive-thru:

Trump put more effort to in fake working than he would have if he would have met some voters, but everything with Trump has to be a con, and must avoid contact with the unwashed masses that he mocks who support him on a regular basis.

Trump has never worked and done any form of labor a day in his life, and he kept that streak alive with his fake McDonalds stunt in Pennsylvania.

Mother sparks outrage after bringing son’s ex-girlfriend to his wedding

Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

A mother has sparked outrage after she brought her son’s ex-girlfriend as a plus-one to his wedding.

In a recent post shared to the popular “Am I The A**hole?” Reddit forum, a newlywed explained how his mother wasn’t a big fan of his partner of three years and now wife, who he referred to as June. He noted that the main reason his mother disliked June was because she didn’t let her “push [her] around.”

“She kept firm boundaries which I really admired and she even helped me do the same. My mom hated this, calling June controlling and wishing I hadn’t broken up with my previous girlfriend Margo, who my mom loved,” he wrote.

However, he confessed that his relationship of five years with Margo was “horrible,” explaining that she guilted him into doing things he didn’t want to do. Although it wasn’t easy, he said that with the support of his friends, he ended the relationship, and his life has now “improved.” He confessed that while his mother was upset about the split, she had “let it go” until he met June, since he wasn’t in any serious relationships before her.

He continued his post by noting that his mother “was very calm” when he got engaged, so he assumed she was now accepting his relationship with June. However, things took a turn on the wedding day, when he gave his divorced parents plus-ones for the wedding since they both remarried when he was younger.

He shared that while the ceremony was pretty small, there were a lot of people at the reception, including his mother’s plus-one, who was not her spouse. Instead, she’d invited his ex-girlfriend, Margo.

“When we got there, my sister and June’s best friend/maid of honor ran up to us in a panic. Before they even said anything I spotted it. My mom was at the table with my dad, my dad’s wife, and Margo,” the former groom wrote. “I wanted to freak but June kept me calm.”

Instead, he pulled his mother and Marog aside, asking them both to leave the wedding. He said that while his mother tried to convince him that he and Margo were a better fit for each other, with claims that June was “in the way of true love,” he “wasn’t hearing it.” His close friend escorted Margo and his mother out of the reception, and he was then “able to relax and enjoy” the event.

However, when he and June got back from their honeymoon, where they didn’t have their phones, he discovered a bunch of messages from his family members, who were upset about the reception.

“They all think I was an asshole for kicking my mom out of her only son’s wedding,” he wrote, while noting that his mother was “really upset” about the situation. “[Some family] think I could have just ignored Margo and didn’t have to ‘freak out.’ A few others, including my dad, think I should have just kicked Margo and let my mom stay but after the stunt my mom pulled, I didn’t want her there either.”

The post has quickly gone viral, with more than 13,000 upvotes. In the comments, multiple people defended the Reddit user’s decision to kick his mother and Margo out of the wedding. They also criticized his mother for her behavior during the wedding, as it affected both the bride and groom.

“Kicking Margo out would not have been enough,” one wrote. “Your mother actively tried to sabotage your wedding…She deserved to be kicked out and your family should acknowledge that she clearly didn’t want to be there. She wanted to hurt you and your wife.”

“Your wedding, your rules. If there’s one day you get to be selfish with your partner, it’s this day. And what your mom did was manipulative. Maybe your mom and Margo should start dating each other since they have things in common like being controlling and manipulative,” another sarcastically wrote.

“Your mom crossed a line by inviting your ex, Margo, to your wedding reception without permission. This was disrespectful to both you and your wife, and you had every right to ask them both to leave. Your wedding day was about you and June, and your mom’s actions undermined that,” a third agreed. “While some family members may be upset, you were right to protect your boundaries and the peace on your special day.”

NFL Week 7 Roundup: Packers, Lions eke out wins on last-second FGs

[ad_1]

PACKERS 24, TEXANS 22

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Brandon McManus kicked a 45-yard field goal as time expired in his debut performance with Green Bay, lifting the Packers past the Houston Texans 24-22 on Sunday.

Green Bay (5-2) overcame three turnovers to win its third straight and snap the Texans’ three-game winning streak.

Green Bay signed McManus because of his history of reliability from within 50 yards. And McManus delivered by making a winning kick on his first field-goal attempt with the Packers. He celebrated by doing a “Lambeau leap” into the corner of the end-zone stands.

Green Bay’s Jordan Love was 23 of 31 for 214 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Houston’s Joe Mixon rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Ka’imi Fairbairn was 3 of 3 on field-goal attempts and put the Texans (5-2) ahead by making a 35-yarder with 1:44 left.

C.J. Stroud was just 10 of 21 for a career-low 86 yards and was sacked four times.

On the game’s final drive, the Packers were at midfield when Love hit Romeo Doubs for a 13-yard gain. An offside penalty on Houston’s Will Anderson brought the Packers 5 yards closer. After a 6-yard completion from Love to Doubs got Green Bay to Houston’s 26, the Packers called a timeout with 3 seconds left to set things up for McManus.

EAGLES 28, GIANTS 3

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Saquon Barkley made a memorable return to MetLife Stadium, rushing for 176 yards and a touchdown and turning early jeers to cheers as he led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 28-3 victory over the offensively inept New York Giants on Sunday.

Jalen Hurts scored on two tush-push quarterback sneaks and threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown as the Eagles (4-2) beat the Giants (2-5) for the sixth time in seven games and 14th in 17. Philadelphia’s defence was just as good, recording eight sacks and limiting New York to 119 yards.

What was different this time was Barkley was wearing an Eagles uniform. The second pick overall by New York in 2018, he left as a free agent after last season and signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract in March. He was greeted by boos but they didn’t last.

Barkley was worth every penny on Sunday, waking up the Eagles with a 55-yard run around left end to set up his 3-yard TD that put Philadelphia ahead 7-0 in the second quarter. Hurts then connected with Brown on a go route on fourth down to increase the margin to 14-0.

Barkley’s 38-yard scamper up the middle set up Hurts’ first tush push in the third quarter and his 41-yarder in the fourth quarter led to the second. Barkley’s 176 yards rushing on 17 carries — 10.4 yards per — was the second-highest total of his career, and he didn’t play much late. His career-best was 189 yards against Washington on Dec. 22, 2019.

SEAHAWKS 34, FALCONS 14

ATLANTA — Geno Smith passed for two touchdowns and Derick Hall returned a fumble 36 yards for a clinching score as the Seattle Seahawks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 34-14 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

The Seahawks (4-3) ended Atlanta’s run of three straight victories, shutting down a Falcons offense that averaged 37 points the two previous weeks.

Smith completed 18 of 28 passes for 207 yards, his second-lowest output of the season but more than enough to throttle the Falcons. He connected with Kenneth Walker on a 17-yard touchdown and a huge 31-yard scoring play to DK Metcalf just before halftime.

After Walker’s TD catch made it 24-14 late in the third quarter, Seattle’s defence clinched the victory.

What is the new safe C++ proposal and what do programmers need to know?

0

[ad_1]

In 2020, Google identified that more than 70% of its Chrome browser’s severe security bugs were in fact caused by memory safety issues.

“That is,” the Chrome team said, “mistakes with pointers in the C or C++ languages which cause memory to be misinterpreted.”

In 2022, the NSA weighed in on memory safety with Neal Ziring, its cybersecurity technical director saying that “Memory management issues have been exploited for decades and are still entirely too common today. We have to consistently use memory safe languages and other protections when developing software to eliminate these weaknesses from malicious cyber actors.”

That wasn’t the end of the matter, however. Memory safe programming languages have continued to be under an intense spotlight. In February of this year, the US White House Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) issued a report advising that all programmers should move to memory-safe programming languages.

The

  • Data Scientist (F/H), Novencia, Lyon
  • Software Architect, GDV Dienstleistungs-GmbH, Hamburg
  • Software Developer, InTraffic, Utrecht
  • Software Architect, Capgemini, Eindhoven

The report pointed out that the burden of cybersecurity threat protection is currently placed on end users, and that, “efforts must be made to proactively eliminate entire categories of software vulnerabilities.”

The report elaborated further, saying that, “Experts have identified a few programming languages that both lack traits associated with memory safety and also have high proliferation across critical systems, such as C and C++.”

Memory safety matters now more than ever, because so much more of what we do happens online. The pandemic accelerated the rapid adoption of ecommerce, online payments, and digital advertising, according to the World Economic Forum.

As a result there are a lot more potential vulnerabilities to exploit. Stack Overflow points out that some of the biggest vulnerability events of the past were memory-safety issues.

These include 2014’s Heartbleed, which affected OpenSSL software allowing bad actors to steal X.509 certificates, usernames and passwords, instant messages, and emails. In 2017, the WannaCry ransomware attack garnered massive attention as it spread globally, infecting more than 230,000 computers.

A new Consumer Security and Financial Crime Report from Revolut points to Meta platforms as the biggest source of all scams (62%) globally during the first half of 2024. Revolut identified that Facebook had fraud volumes (39%) which were more than double that of WhatsApp (18%).

Making C++ safe

Memory safe languages do exist and include Rust, Go, Java, Swift, and Python. C++ is under particular scrutiny because of the amount of critical code that has been written in it.

Given the context, it isn’t so surprising that the C++ community has reacted, announcing the Safe C++ Extensions proposal in September of this year. The work is being done via the C++ Alliance, and its president and executive director Vinnie Falco said that this was, “a revolutionary proposal that adds memory safety features to the C++ programming language.”

Falco added that: “the need for safe code has never been more pressing. With the increasing importance of software security and reliability, developers are facing mounting pressure to adopt safer coding practices. The Safe C++ Extensions aim to address this critical need by introducing novel features that prevent common memory-related errors.”

So will this fix the issue? Some critics are skeptical, and the developer from the C++ Alliance, Sean Baxter points out that:

“There’s only one popular systems level/non-garbage collected language that provides rigorous memory safety. That’s the Rust language. Although they play in the same space, C++ and Rust have different designs with limited interop capability, making incremental migration from C++ to Rust a painstaking process.”

A number of actions are suggested to ensure performant C++ code, including prohibiting developers from writing operations that might result in lifetime safety, type safety, or thread safety undefined behaviors.

Additionally, there are other challenges, with Baxter pointing out that, “Although they play in the same space, C++ and Rust have different designs with limited interop capability, making incremental migration from C++ to Rust a painstaking process.”

Moving code to memory safe status will be painstaking and time-consuming, but the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is seeking to bridge this gap using AI. It is developing a programmatic code conversion vehicle called TRACTOR (Translating All C TO Rust).

It says that, “the goal is to achieve the same quality and style that a skilled Rust developer would produce, thereby eliminating the entire class of memory safety security vulnerabilities present in C programs.”

Liray also scored 14 for VNS. Christian Olaes had 10 points on seven attacks and three blocks, while Titus Villacrusis and Wewe Medina, still recovering from illness, added eight and six points, respectively.

“Maganda naman ‘yung ginalaw nila. Actually may problem kami kasi ang daming may flu samin. ‘Yung middle blocker ko wala, ‘yung (Roderick) Medino na starter ko, hindi pa rin siya okay. Galing siya sa five-day na flu eh, ‘di pa siya nakaka-recover,” said VNS coach Ralph Ocampo.

Scammers exploit grief with fake funeral streaming on Facebook

[ad_1]

Scammers use every possible method to deceive you, from social engineering through human verification pages to impersonating government agencies. You’d think there would be a limit to their tactics, that certainly they wouldn’t exploit someone’s death to scam those who are grieving. Unfortunately, you’d be wrong.

A new scam has surfaced in which bad actors claim to offer video streaming of funeral services for the recently deceased.

Those who follow the links to these streaming services are then prompted to provide their credit card information and asked to sign up for suspicious video streaming websites.

GET SECURITY ALERTS, EXPERT TIPS – SIGN UP FOR KURT’S NEWSLETTER – THE CYBERGUY REPORT HERE

A woman on Facebook (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

How does the scam work?

The news of this scam comes from KrebsOnSecurity, who heard from several victims. It typically targets the friends and family of the deceased. Scammers begin by creating a Facebook group for the person who passed away, listing the correct time and date of the funeral service. They then claim that the service can be streamed online by following a link, which leads to a page requesting credit card information.

It’s surprisingly easy to find these fake funeral groups on Facebook. Just searching for keywords like “funeral” and “stream” brings up tons of pages, some for past services, others for upcoming ones.

These groups usually have a photo of the deceased as the profile picture and try to send users to newly created video streaming websites that ask for credit card payments before you can watch. Even worse, some of them ask for donations in the name of the deceased.

Fake funeral streaming scam on Facebook (KrebsOnSecurity)

DON’T FALL FOR THAT ‘LOOK WHO DIED’ FACEBOOK MESSAGE TRAP

But who are these scammers?

The scammers behind these fake streaming links operate primarily from Rajshahi, Bangladesh, under a group called apkdownloadweb. They have registered multiple domains, including livestreamnow.xyz, live24sports.xyz and onlinestreaming.xyz. These websites appear to offer live streams for various events, including funerals and community gatherings, but they are simply traps designed to deceive users.

The individual allegedly associated with apkdownloadweb is Mazidul Islam, who has a background in running an IT blog, per KrebsOnSecurity’s article. His LinkedIn profile reveals this connection. The email linked to their DNS provider is reportedly associated with another individual, Mohammod Mehedi Hasan, suggesting a network of scammers working together.

Scammers exploit social media, creating fake Facebook groups that promote links to their fraudulent streaming sites. They take advantage of genuine community events, misleading people into believing they can watch live streams by clicking on their links.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SOCIAL MEDIA SCAMMERS

5 ways to protect yourself from Facebook link scams

1. Verify the source before clicking links: Always check the source of any link before clicking. Look for official announcements from event organizers or trusted news sources. If a link appears in a social media post, confirm it by visiting the organization’s official website or social media page. Scammers often use similar-sounding domain names, so double-check for spelling errors or unusual domain endings.

The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

2. Enable two-factor authentication: Activate two-factor authentication on your online accounts whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring not just a password but also a second verification method, such as a text message or an authentication app. Even if scammers manage to get your password, they would need the second factor to access your accounts.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

3. Regularly update your passwords: Change your passwords regularly and use strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts. This reduces the risk of multiple accounts being compromised if one password is stolen. Also, consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

4. Educate yourself about scams: Stay informed about common online scams and how they operate. Awareness is key to prevention. Research how scammers craft their messages and the types of offers that are usually too good to be true. Websites like the Federal Trade Commission provide resources for identifying and reporting scams, and you can always rely on Cyberguy.com.

5. Report suspicious activity: If you encounter a fake streaming link or a suspicious post, report it to the platform where you found it. Most social media sites have mechanisms for reporting scams or fraudulent activity. Reporting helps keep others safe by alerting the platform to potential threats. Additionally, consider sharing your experience with friends and family to help them stay informed and cautious.

GHOST-HACKING: HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SCAMS FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE OF THOSE YOU KNEW

Kurt’s key takeaway

Scammers don’t spare anyone, and this Facebook funeral scam should make that clear. They are willing to take advantage of someone’s death and profit from those who are grieving. While this is extremely galling, it serves as a reminder that we can’t let our guard down when navigating through the darkness of the internet. Always watch out for the links you click, even if they seem perfectly safe.

Ligue 1 condemns PSG fans for anti-gay chants

0

[ad_1]

Ligue 1 has condemned anti-gay chants made by some Paris Saint-Germain fans during the home game against Strasbourg on Saturday.

PSG are playing their bitter rivals next Sunday in Marseille, and the offensive slurs were made about the club and their midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The France international is a former PSG player who made more than 200 appearances for the club from 2012-19, and his move to Marseille has been seen as a betrayal.

“These latest discriminatory chants made by Paris Saint-Germain supporters are unacceptable when, at the same time, the whole of professional soccer has been working to ban homophobic behavior and chants from stadiums,” the league said in a statement.

While the chanting was happening, the stadium announcer at Parc des Princes twice asked for the chants to stop and was jeered.

Ligue 1 has said its disciplinary committee would look into evidence.

Last season, some PSG players received a one-match suspended sentence by the league’s disciplinary committee for offensive chants aimed at Marseille after a home league match.

Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, Randal Kolo Muani and Layvin Kurzawa were filmed using insults while celebrating at the end of a 4-0 win against Marseille. The four players issued apologies.

That match was also marred by anti-gay chanting by sections of PSG fans targeting Marseille players. As a result, the league ordered the closure of the Auteuil stand behind one of the goals for two matches, including one that was suspended.

PSG fans are banned from attending next Sunday’s game in Marseille at Stade Velodrome for security reasons, with a history of clashes between rival fans.

The rivalry between the clubs has been one of the most vehement in French football since the 1990s, when Marseille was enjoying its heyday and PSG was becoming more ambitious with the backing of television broadcaster Canal Plus.

PSG have been bankrolled by Qatari investors QSI since 2011 and have become the most successful French club domestically with 12 league titles — two more than Marseille and Saint-Etienne.

Although Marseille have not won the league since 2010, they still claim the ultimate bragging right over PSG as the only French club to have won the Champions League.

bitchy | Dunlop: Queen Camilla isn’t popular in Australia because of Diana & Meghan

[ad_1]

King Charles and Queen Camilla touched down in Sydney, Australia on Friday evening, then rested on Saturday. I’ll cover their Sunday visit to the Anglican church on Monday, but here’s an interesting note – the church visit was originally supposed to be low-key and quiet, but the courtiers must have been worried that it would too quiet, so they made a specific appeal to Aussies to come out and see Charles and Camilla. As much as there’s a larger conversation about the crown and whether Australia should become a republic, don’t miss the fact that Camilla is not and has never been an asset to her husband. Don’t miss the fact that Camilla will forever live the shadows of more popular royal women:

Queen Camilla’s Australia tour with King Charles “won’t be easy” due to “less agreeable” crowds Down Under, an expert has warned. According to royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop, with all eyes on the King, it could be a trip that Camilla finds particular difficult.

She explained to the Mirror: “The press corps have flown in and the King has postponed his cancer treatment – everyone is set for Charles’ first tour to Australia as monarch. Headlines have been full of it – the political snubs from Australia’s premiers, to the pared-down itinerary and absence of walkabouts. Will Charles’s 17th visit down under, seal the deal for Republicans or set royal hearts aflutter?”

“With all eyes on the King, there has been less talk of Camilla, who will be touching down as Australia’s new queen. Her gig won’t be easy – she has giant shoes to fill and not just those of the late Queen. Against expectations, it was just over 40 years ago that Australians surprised themselves and fell in love with a fresh royal fairy story – cue the arrival of Charles and Diana on a six week tour in 1983. Staunchly Republican Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, had been hoping that the incoming Prince and Princess of Wales would seal the deal for dumping the British monarchy. Not a bit of it. Crowd surges, overwhelmed police, flags, flowers and gridlocked roads: 1983 saw the start of a brand new phenomenon: Diana-mania.”

“The public’s love was unadulterated – so much so that Prince Charles, who had been trying to woo Australia since 1966, took umbrage. Sadly Diana is long gone, but while here in Britain we have grown fond of Queen Camilla, who has been rehabilitated in our press, in Australia memories of the ‘other woman’ and Diana’s rough treatment at the hands of the royal family are more pronounced.”

But it’s not just memories of Diana that might work against Camilla in Australia, as Tessa explained another factor may hinder her popularity. She added: “Nor has the international fall-out from the Harry and Meghan debacle helped Camilla’s cause. The Sussexes’ departure from the Royal Family followed hot on the heels of their 2018 Australia tour, with Harry subsequently airing ‘wicked stepmother’ tropes and citing Camilla’s ‘dangerous’ connections. The King and Queen, who have not been to Australia since Megxit, will find new dissenters in the pack. Fortunately the trip is short, and positive polling for an committed monarch with cancer bodes well, but beyond the summer sun, Queen Camilla will be on alert for a less agreeable Australia lurking in the shadows.”

[From The Daily Mirror]

It’s especially wild that Charles and Camilla’s tour is the first major Australian since Harry and Meghan’s 2018 tour. The connections, six years later, are so pronounced. Harry and Meghan were wildly popular and Meghan was regarded, internationally, as a bridge to the future for the monarchy, a breath of fresh air, a woman of color who was uniquely situated to modernize a staid and racist institution and drag the colonialist mess into the 21st century. And right after that tour, the Windsors began their campaign to drive Meghan out by any means necessary. Camilla was a huge part of that campaign, just as Camilla’s fingerprints were all over every part of Diana’s misery. I hope Camilla gets booed especially hard in Oz.
