J.T. Poston ends long day in Las Vegas with third career PGA Tour title

[ad_1]

LAS VEGAS — J.T. Poston used a burst of birdies to build a comfortable lead in the morning and afternoon, first for a three-shot lead after 54 holes and then to give himself a big enough cushion to hold on for a 4-under 67 and a one-shot victory Sunday in the Shriners Children’s Open.

Poston never trailed since making a 20-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole when he returned to finish the third round. He had two more birdies for a 66 to build a three-shot lead.

He made three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the back nine of the final round and led by four shots with three holes to play. Poston still had to sweat it out to the very last putt.

Doug Ghim closed with a 65, making a 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole at the TPC Summerlin to close within one shot. Poston lagged his 45-foot birdie putt to 4 feet and calmly sank that for his third career PGA Tour title.

The winning putt felt a little longer because Poston missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 16th and a 4-foot par putt on the 17th, either of which would have put the tournament away.

“I just told myself, ‘This is what you dream of, a putt to win on the PGA Tour. Try to forget the last two,’” Poston said. “I told myself, ‘I’ve made a million of these. Just do one more.’”

The victory assures Poston of returning to the Masters for the third straight year and moving back inside the top 50 in the world. He was playing for the first time since the BMW Championship, wanting to spend time at home with a daughter born in March.

This was a happy return for the 31-year-old from North Carolina, who already was guaranteed being in the $20 million signature events because he finished among the top 50 in the FedEx Cup. This gives him an early start at Kapalua for The Sentry to start the new season.

Ghim was runner-up, his highest finish on the PGA Tour.

He had his chances. Ghim made eagle on the par-5 ninth to pull within one shot, but he missed a pair of birdie putts from 8 feet and then failed to get up-and-down for birdie on the reachable par-4 15th as Poston was pulling away.

Ghim two-putted the par-5 16th, picked up another shot when Poston bogeyed the par 3 and then birdied the last to force Poston to make one last putt.

Matti Schmid continued his strong play in the FedEx Cup Fall, closing with a 66 to tie for third with Rico Hoey, who also had a 66.

Schmid was No. 125 in the FedEx Cup — the top 125 keep a full PGA Tour card for 2025 — when he tied for 16th in Mississippi, finished fifth last week in Utah and tied for third in Las Vegas. He now is up to No. 77.

Another big consolation prize went to Michael Kim, who closed with a 62 and tied for fifth, moving from No. 129 in the FedEx Cup to No. 112.

Poston felt the entire day was a struggle, even though he went 41 consecutive holes without a bogey until his short miss on the 17th, and led the final 23 holes of the tournament.

“I wasn’t quite as sharp with the scoring clubs,” Poston said. “It felt like a grind all day. I know I had a comfortable lead, but I never felt safe. Doug was playing great and I felt like I was just plodding around.”

The PGA Tour next heads to Japan for the Zozo Championship, a 78-man field with no cut, before returning to North America for three tournaments to close out the season.

Liwag double-double powers Blazers past Bombers

Allen Liwag is not keeping it a secret that he has molded his inside game to mirror that of a former NBA star. And he has taken College of St. Benilde along for the ride in Season 100 of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Liwag scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in leading the Blazers to an 80-65 demolition job of Jose Rizal University, as Benilde remained in the elimination-round lead after rising to 10-2 overall at Filoil EcoOil Arena in San Juan on Sunday.

“I always observed how he (Dwight Howard) did it during practice and eventually, I was able to adopt the move, too,’’ said Liwag in Filipino as he kept the lead in the season MVP derby by sustaining his double-double average in points and rebounds.

Liwag was referring to Dwight Howard’s bread-and-butter post-up move, which he learned while they were teammates at Strong Group Athletics, which finished second in the Dubai International Championship early this year.

Meanwhile, Mapua’s Chris Hubilla poured all of his 17 points in the first half and then focused on defending San Beda’s most reliable scorer as the Cardinals survived the defending champion Red Lions, 58-55, in the other game.

Staying within reach

But while Hubilla was busy restraining Yukien Andrada, Marc Cuenco delivered the goods in the fourth by scoring 10 of his 11 points, including a go-ahead three that stopped the rampaging Lions on their tracks.

“Yukien is hard to defend, you don’t know what kind of shot he will take. Never mind that I didn’t score in the second half as long as I get to stop him,’’ said Hubilla, whose gallant effort for the second straight game kept the Cardinals within reach of the pacesetting Blazers.

The Cardinals are half a game behind the leaders at 10-3, while sending the Lions to their fifth defeat in 13 games.

Bryan Sajonia had 12 points and Jomel Puno added 11 for the Lions, who had to crawl from 14 points down that set up a thrilling finish. INQ

Cricket news 2024, New Zealand wins T20 women’s World Cup over South Africa in final

0

[ad_1]

New Zealand have won the Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time, beating South Africa by 32 runs after a standout performance from Amelia Kerr with bat and ball.

South Africa’s chase was held to 9-126 in 20 overs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in reply to New Zealand’s 5-158 in the final of the 18-day tournament.

The White Ferns added to their one-day title at the 2000 Cricket World Cup and became the first New Zealand team to win a T20 World Cup, with the men’s team – the Black Caps – yet to achieve this feat.

South Africa was also seeking to become a first-time T20 champion. It was a second successive heartbreak for South Africa, after it had lost the 2023 final on home soil to six-time champion Australia.

After South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt won the toss and opted to bowl, Kerr top scored for New Zealand with a 38-ball 43.

Brooke Halliday hit 38 runs in 28 deliveries and opener Suzie Bates scored 32 in 31. Nonkululeko Mlaba took 2-31 in four overs for South Africa.

South Africa made a strong start to its chase, reaching 1-51 in 6.5 overs but never really threatened afterward, reaching the halfway stage of its innings at 64-3.

Wolvaardt top scored for South Africa with a 27-ball 33.

Kerr took 3-24 in her four overs, including Wolvaardt’s wicket.

Kerr was named player of the match and also player of the tournament, finishing with a record 15 wickets in six games.

“I am a little bit speechless and so stoked to get the win, considering what this team has been through. It’s what dreams are made of,” the all-rounder said.

“The wicket was pretty good and I thought 140-plus would get us in the game. It was an outstanding contribution from everyone to finish the job.”

Both teams fielded an unchanged side from their semi final wins where South Africa stunned defending champions Australia in the first semi by eight wickets, while New Zealand beat West Indies in the second semifinal by eight runs.

New Zealand had previously finished runners-up, losing to England in 2009 and Australia in 2010.

The White Ferns were on a losing 10-match run prior to this World Cup, but showed a brilliant turn of form to reach the final for the first time in 14 years, with only one league stage loss through the tournament.

bitchy | Sleepy, exhausted Donald Trump ‘nodded off’ in the middle of a campaign event

[ad_1]

On Friday, Politico got the ball rolling on a pretty simple story. I think the simplicity of it is why it’s picked up so much steam in recent days. Politico reported that Donald Trump’s team keeps canceling so many interviews and campaign events because the 78-year-old white supremacist and rapist is “exhausted.” As in, Trump’s own people are citing his exhaustion as the reason why he can’t keep up with a demanding campaign schedule in the final weeks of the election cycle. Well, after Politico’s report, Kamala Harris’s campaign obviously jumped all over it: Trump is not only unhinged and incompetent, but he’s just too old, too senile and too sleepy to do the job as president.

The Harris campaign only had to wait a few hours until the Trump campaign underlined how bad things had gotten for their candidate. Trump was campaigning in Detroit, Michigan when the microphones went out on stage. When his mic cut out mid-speech, Trump waddled around the stage in front of a screen which hilariously read “Technical Difficulties: Complicated Business.” While Trump waited two hours for the microphones to get fixed, he nodded off. Sleepy Don, too fatigued to campaign, too exhausted to lead. Oh, and did I mention the Detroit venue was barely half-filled? Dude can’t even fill his sad little Nazi rallies anymore. This is what Kamala HQ posted:

As I said, the “Trump is exhausted” storyline has now gotten a lot of coverage. It’s so easy to describe that the networks are even covering Politico’s report. It’s worth noting that Trump has canceled interviews with most networks too, because he’s exhausted and numb and deranged and he only wants to talk to the friendliest wingnuts he can find. This is truly one of the best closing statements for VP Harris to make.

Trump Humiliates Himself By Pretending To Work At McDonalds

0

[ad_1]

Trump has no policies or agenda, so he tried to cover it up with a stunt in Pennsylvania where he pretended to work at McDonalds.

Video of Trump at a suburban Philadelphia McDonalds:

This is really embarrassing, not for Trump . He has no shame. It is embarrassing for the country. Trump is a 78 year old man who thinks that he can fool people into voting for him by pulling off the worst remake of Undercover Boss in history.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) put it best when she was asked about the logic of Trump’s stunt on MSNBC and said, “There is no logic to it. He has not put forth an economic agenda. He, as you know, appears to be not well. And he is engaged in some really bizarre types of activities during this campaign. So this is just another one of those stunts that he will continue on through the campaign.”

Trump is a one trick pony. It is the same gimmicks and stunts in every campaign. Trump is at a McDonalds because he has been harboring the delusion that Kamala Harris is lying about working at McDonalds as a teen.

It is nothing more than the same tired stuff only now Trump is an old man in an apron wandering into a swing state McDonalds and demanding to work the deep fryer.

This is just humiliating, and in a little more than two weeks voters can make it all stop for good.

Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown, wearing MAGA gear, throws ‘Trump/Vance’ rally towels out to Steelers fans

0

[ad_1]

One night after he spoke at a Donald Trump rally, former NFL receiver Antonio Brown was spotted in Pittsburgh outside the stadium he used to call home with the Steelers, passing out “Trump Vance” yellow and black towels to fans before “Sunday Night Football.”

The former president is expected to be in attendance at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday night as the Steelers take on Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.

And Brown, who took the stage for a speech in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, where he mocked the Democrat candidates, nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz, continued to show his love for Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, with “Terrible Towels” featuring their names on it with the election less than a month away.

Brown was wearing a black hat that had Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” slogan across it, which comes after he wore a similar red hat and MAGA shirt during the rally on Saturday.

Steelers Nation still holds love for Brown after he grew into a superstar receiver with them after being drafted out of Central Michigan in 2010.

Brown made seven Pro Bowls with the Steelers, including six in a row from 2013-2018, and led the league in receiving twice (2014, 2017) as well as receiving touchdowns (2018).

STEELERS ADD SECURITY MEASURES FOR TRUMP’S ATTENDANCE AT GAME AGAINST AARON RODGERS’ JETS

Brown’s football career took a turn for the worse, though, after that 2018 season and he joined the New England Patriots for a single game before moving on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who he infamously left at MetLife Stadium with his jersey and pads torn off while a game against the Jets in 2021 was ongoing.

Since then, Brown has made headlines for all the wrong reasons, including multiple arrests and sharing his unfiltered opinions through his unofficial brand known as “CTESPN,” which he consistently hashtags on social media.

That game in MetLife Stadium was the last time Brown played in the NFL, but he showed up Sunday night in Pittsburgh to reunite with Steelers fans while making the difference he preached he wanted to for Trump’s campaign.

Brown, who was accompanied by former Steelers teammate Le’Veon Bell in Latrobe on Saturday, took the podium and ripped Harris and Walz.

“Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, did you really know they want to put tampons in the boys’ bathroom?” Brown asked the crowd. “That’s really insane, right?”

Brown was referring to Walz being called “Tampon Tim” by Republican opponents after signing a Minnesota law that mandated tampons be free of charge in public schools in 2023.

As Brown continues to show his support of Trump, the Steelers and Acrisure Stadium security team have bolstered protocols while warning fans of delays getting in and out of the stadium with the former president’s arrival scheduled.

“With former President Trump expected to attend Sunday night’s game as a guest of an individual suite holder, we are working with Secret Service and local authorities to ensure the safety and security of all our fans,” a statement from the team read. “As always, we will work to make the fan experience the same as it always is for every Steelers home game at Acrisure Stadium.

Bittersweet feeling for Nambatac as he plays in first title series

What Rey Nambatac had imagined for years finally became a reality on Friday night when he reached the championship round in the PBA. But he wasn’t quite sure how to feel about it.

The TNT guard let out a heartfelt “Finally, yes, yes, yes!” in a chat with reporters, but not without reaching for a pensive musing on opposing Rain or Shine, the team that brought him to the pro ranks seven years ago.

Article continues after this advertisement

“I’m happy [but] with a bit of sadness because there was a time—when I was still on the other team—that we hoped for this,” he said of making the Finals.

“Kind of sad. But at the end of the day, it’s just basketball and it’s just business. Whether you like it or not, this is all part of being a professional,” he went on.

TNT punched a return ticket to the title series after beating a promising Rain or Shine squad in five games in the final four. Nambatac was an integral part of that run, which is a feat on its own, considering he only joined the Tropang Giga in the offseason.

“It feels like only yesterday,” the former Letran ace said. “But you know, I’m thankful to the coaches, especially coach Chot [Reyes], the bosses, the utility staff and, most especially, the players, since they were the biggest factors why I got adjusted quickly.”

Nambatac felt right at home with TNT in this Governors’ Cup, helping the club to an 8-2 win-loss mark to top Group A. The crafty guard went on to sustain that fine play in the playoffs, averaging 15 points on a squad littered with scoring talents like Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Calvin Oftana and Roger Pogoy.

More than his knack for scoring, Nambatac’s playmaking afforded the Tropang Giga to rest its most potent closer, Jayson Castro, for the series that matters most.

“I just embraced everything and let my game justify my place here,” said Nambatac when asked about his thriving situation at TNT. “I think the biggest [thing] here is I was able to fit into my role.”

Coach Yeng Guiao, the coach who selected Nambatac seventh overall in the 2017 Rookie Draft, said he is proud of his former ward.

“We’re happy that he found a really nice situation for himself to get to the Finals,” Guiao said. “And I’m sure that he’s also happy for us that we got to reach the semis.”

Nambatac made sure that the feeling was truly mutual, shaking and even hugging his former coach and teammates after the match while heaping praises on his old team later.

“And I think we all saw that last conference and even early this season. I wasn’t really that much of a loss,” he said, humbly. “Give those guys two to three years, I bet they’re going to be steady contenders. I know they learned a lot from this series against us.” INQ
