(KRON) – The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is warning residents about a new scam involving a person posing as a member of the Sheriff’s Office Civil Unit who demands cash for alleged active warrants.
According to CCSO, these scammers inform potential victims that they have an active warrant for failing to appear in court and insists they must pay immediately to avoid legal consequences. Investigators report that suspects typically request payment through gift cards.
Officials believe these scammers may be using technology to make it appear as though they are calling from legitimate sheriff’s office phone numbers or using the names of actual employees.
CCSO advises residents to hang up if they receive such calls and reminds the community that law enforcement agencies will never ask for immediate payment over the phone or threaten arrest for unpaid fees or fines.
